Video Game Trade Event, E3

World’s largest video game trade event, E3 was held for 3 days from June 12th to 14th at the LA Convention Center.
With more than 200 companies participating, this year’s event was filled with new titles and gaming platform announcements.
Sony showed trailers of their new “Spiderman” game where they collaborated with Marvel Entertainment as well as their latest PS4 title created by Hideo Kojima, the game creator of “Metal Gear Solid” series.
Nintendo had “Super Smash Bros. Unlimited” for their Nintendo Switch console, where varieties of game characters have a battle royal.
Other American companies also had new announcements for their popular series. Attendees enjoyed the event by engaging with VR games and watching game demos.
E3 originally started for the industry individuals only however, public attendees are also welcomed from last year.
Organizer, ESA aims to promote the new games through social media by having the fans actually experience it in person.
About 70 thousand people attended this 3 day event.

Jokun Recognition Community Luncheon

A Jokun Recognition Community luncheon was held on Sunday, June 10th at Montebello’s Quiet Cannon.
This luncheon is annually held by JCC and commemorates awarded individuals under the jurisdiction of Consulate General of Japan in LA.
Kitty Sankey was awarded with Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays on Autumn of 2017.
She is a third generation Japanese American born in Tokyo and contributed to human rights of Japanese American as she worked at the LA school district.
She then took office as the first female president of JCC on 2016.
Ernest Doizaki received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays this Spring.
He is a third generation Japanese American born in LA, and contributed to spreading Japanese food as the president of the American Fish Company.
He also found the JANM and worked as the president.
Thelma Press was awarded on autumn of 2017.
Ellis Krauss received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays on Spring 2018 but did not attend the ceremony.
Recipients were all awarded a plaque by President, Jeff Yamazaki of JCC.

Sakura Gardens’ Annual Residents Picnic

Saturday, June 9th was Sakura Gardens’ Annual Residents Picnic, a retirement home in Boyle Heights.
This picnic is annually held by staff and volunteers working hard together for the residents to have a fun lunch.
CEO of North Star Senior Living, Rick Jensen stated “I am very honored to join this lunch with all of you” at his greetings.
Former president of the volunteer group, Friends of Keiro, Betty Yumori stated “Thank you for all the hard works of the volunteers and staffs.”
Habit hamburgers and green beans tempura were served for lunch through Joseph and Yoshie Hirata and support from KEIRO.
About 120 residents enjoyed the event through entertainments like dance, karaoke and door prizes.
More than half of the current residents are Shin-Issei with Japanese as their primary language.
It’s been 2 years since the facility management changed to North Star Senior Living from Keiro.

Nebuta for Nisei Week

Preparation for the Japanese American summer festival, Nisei Week has begun.
Nanka Aomori Kenjin Kai in Little Tokyo started their practice of Ohayashi for the LA Nebuta Bayashi Hozonkai.
The Nebuta has been the main attraction for the Nisei Week Festival and liven up the event.
This year is the 12th year since the Nebuta joined the Nisei Week with the cooperation of Aomori since 2007.
The members are putting a lot of effort into their practice for the new Nebuta, “Kintoki” that they made this year.
The LA Nebuta Bayashi Hozonkai made their 2nd Nebuta “Kintoki” last October with the help of Nebuta-shi, Hiroh Takenami.
“Kintoki” debuted in the 2017 Hollywood Christmas Parade and gathered attention.
“Kintoki” will show with the first Nebuta, “Yoshitsune” at the Nisei Week Grand Parade in August.

Seminar “Japanese Business Corporate Social Responsibility”

A “Japanese Business Corporate Social Responsibility” seminar was held at Toyota Meeting Hall in Torrance on Monday, April 30th.
This was held by the non profit organization, Little Tokyo Service Center active in social welfare and community development.
Takuya Hirano, president of Microsoft Japan was invited as the speaker from Japan with an interview with NHK LA Bureau Chief, Kaori Iida.
Microsoft is known for contributing to the society. Hirano spoke about how the company sees connecting with the society is important through his career and experience.
For the second part of the seminar, 3 business personnels based in LA called the “Shin-Issei” joined the panel discussion and talked about their vision in contributing to the society. Shin-Issei are people who came to the US postwar.
About 250 people including community members from all over LA and businessmen attended the seminar.

“Fiesta Matsuri” for Children’s Day

Sunday, May 6th was “Fiesta Matsuri” for Children’s Day in Little Tokyo.
This is an annual event held by the JACCC to celebrate Children’s Day.
Parents and kids enjoyed the event as each cultural organizations held workshops and booths where kids can play games.
Decoration workshop was held at the Tanabata Festival booth, and kids learned how to make their own Kazari.
Tanabata festival started in Sendai City of Miyazaki, Japan. It was first brought to LA in 2009 for Nisei Week. Since then, individuals; companies and organizations have been participating annually with varieties of Kazari and entertaining the attendees.
The theme for this year’s 10th anniversary is “Spirit of Togetherness.” Although many people participated during the Great East Japan Earthquake, the numbers of newcomers have decreased so they hope to bring people together once again.
The Tanabata Kazari workshop is held at the Little Tokyo Koban every Saturday until August 4th.

The Premiere of the Movie “Downrage”

The premiere of the movie “Downrage” was held at the Beverly Hills’ movie theater on Tuesday, April 24th.
“Downrage” is directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and has been shown in many film festivals since its debut in Toronto International Film Festival.
Kitamura has been internationally acclaimed for his 2001 film “VERSUS.”
Since, he has directed many popular films like “Godzilla: Final Wars” and “Lupin the Third.”
He is now based in LA and works on both Japanese and Hollywood films.
“Downrage” is his 3rd Hollywood film; a suspenseful horror where young characters are stranded as their car break down in the middle of nowhere, and are attacked by an unknown someone.
A Q&A session with the cast and staff were held after the premiere, and Kitamura talked about the episodes during the filmmaking process.
“Downrage” is available on the horror movie streaming service, Shudder.

Gala Dinner to Support the Cure of Type 1 Diabetes

A gala dinner was held on Saturday, May 12th at Beverly Hills to support the cure of type 1 diabetes.
JDRF is a treatment research facility that also supports type 1 diabetic patients, and the donations collected through this gala dinner are all going to their activities.
Unlike the type 2 that is caused by lifestyle, type 1 is an autoimmune disease and cannot be cured completely.
The JDRF annually award individuals who have committed with us, This year, Andy Bales and the American Honda were chosen.
Andy Bales is a charity worker in LA supporting the homeless.
He himself is the patient of type 1 diabetes and have supported JDRF for a long time.
American Honda invited KTLA news anchor, Frank Buckley and his son who is type 1 diabetic, Ben Buckley on their float for this year’s Rose Parade and promoted JDRF’s activities.

JFC Sake Expo & Food Show

Saturday, May 19th was JFC Sake Expo & Food Show at Costa Mesa.
This event is held by the Japanese food import and distributor, JFC International and held annually to spread its market in North America.
This event is for the food industry individuals. Sake breweries and food manufacturers promoted their new lineups.
At the Japanese sake booth; Junmai, Ginjo, Daiginjo, Shochu and Umeshu were introduced and enjoyed by the attendees.
The tuna used for the filetting show was a hatchery fish raised in Aichi, Japan for 3 and a half years.
At the Japanese food manufacturer; gyoza, karaage, ponzu and other izakaya related ingredients were introduced.
Shochu cocktails using aloe yogurt and products that go well with liquor were also promoted.
The attendance made its record high this year. Attendees enjoyed the event by learning the Japanese culture and coming up with new menu lineups.

“Tokyo City Cup” and Japan Family Day at the Santa Anita Park

Sunday, April 8th was the “Tokyo City Cup” and Japan Family Day at the Santa Anita Park.The Santa Anita Park became sisters with the Ohi  Racecourse on 1995. Since then, “Tokyo City Cup” happens every Spring at Santa Anita and “Santa Anita Trophy” at the Ohi Racecourse on  Summer strengthening their friendship. Tokyo City Cup is a high-stakes race betting for the grand prize of $100,000 at a 1.5 mile long distance course, and thoroughbred horses ran again this year. Jokey, Flavien Prat’s Hoppertunity chased Twentytwentyvision from behind and finished 1st place. Pictures were taken with a toast at the winner’s circle with the Ohi Racecourse representatives and the horse owners. Also, many Japanese cultures were introduced at the “Japan Family Day” that happened at the same day. Food booths like takoyaki and okonomiyaki lined up as well as pop cultures being introduced. Demonstrations of karate and sumo wrestling were also held. 15,000 people visited this day. Families enjoyed their nice, spring weekend.

the 42nd inauguration ceremony & the gala dinner of the Japanese American Bar Association

Wednesday, April 4th was the 42nd inauguration ceremony with the gala dinner of the Japanese American Bar Association at Downtown
LA. JABA was found to fulfill their purpose of assisting Japanese Americans obtain their civil rights and support Japanese Americans that are in legal professions. They are also active in the community and offer free legal consultation in Japanese several times a year. They also have scholarship programs honoring the Japanese American lawyers who experienced the concentration camps of WWII, and offer the opportunity for young adults to learn the law. Ryan Iwasaka took the office this year. Iwasaka stated “I shall pass down the history of not only ours but what our parents and ancestors experienced to the future generation.” LA Mayor, Eric Garcetti’s keynote speech was this night’s main event. Garcetti stated “The most important towards racism is the bonding of every one of us” as he mentioned the history of Japanese internment. The Community Trailblazer Award was awarded to 4th generation Japanese American NASCAR driver, Kyle Miyata Larson. He couldn’t be present for the award due to a race however, a video was shown introducing his family history and accepting the plaque.

The 2nd business mixer by the JCC of SoCal

The 2nd business mixer was held by the JCC of SoCal on Thursday, March 22nd and participants got the opportunity to network. JCC is a nonprofit organization focusing on networking Japanese businesses and strengthening US/Japan relationships. This event is held every month aiming to stimulate the community through business. Due to the cooperation of the SoCal Rinri Houjinkai, Nadeshiko-kai that spreads kimono culture and the Japanese American Men’s Glee Club, 40 expats and business owners of the LA and OC have participated. Participants exchanged business cards and networked through introducing themselves. The next business mixer will be held at OC.

The subsidy acceptance luncheon of Keiro

Sunday, April 14th was the subsidy acceptance luncheon of Keiro at the JANM. Keiro is a NPO organization founded to support and better the lives of the Japanese American elders and their helpers. Currently, 73 thousand Japanese American elders reside in LA, OC
and Ventura county. 97% live in their homes and is said that they wish in-home care. Understanding the situation, Keiro has been providing subsidy to small and mid-size nonprofit organizations as part of the community. This program started 2 years ago with 14 members reviewing the organizations. This year, subsidy was sent to 41 organizations. Representative of Keiro, Leona Hiraoka stated “Our partnership with the organizations will be more important from now on.” Iyashi Care, a palliative care for the patient and their supporters were provided this day by the medical institution, Providence Health and Service. Physical and mental care were provided to the people.

Japan Tourism Event

March 12th was the PR event of the tourism organization, JNTO at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood Highland. JNTO is an independent administrative corporation in charge of promotional activities for foreign travelers coming to Japan. According to the JNTO, 28 million foreign travelers visited Japan last year. The expenditure was a record high of 4.4 trillion yen. The Japanese government announced its goal is to welcome 40 million travelers and accomplish the expenditure of 8 trillion yen by the year 2020 for the Tokyo Olympics. They will be starting a campaign “Enjoy My Japan” in the US and promoting to the demographics that are not considering Japan as their tour destination. The JNTO LA division stated that they will be working with the Japan House that’s opening in Hollywood Highland this year, and attract customers to Japan through public elations and events.

JBA General Assembly

March 16th was the general assembly for the JBA and Asahi Gakuen ran by the JBA, as well as their reception party at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel in Torrance. The 2018 JBA executive director was announced. Satoshi Okawa of Sumitomo Corporation of America was chosen and will take office. This is his 2nd term since 2016.


Imperial New Year’s Poetry Reading

March 18th was the celebration dinner at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel in Torrance for the Utakai Hajime poetry contest. This year, Atsuko Suzuki of OC won. The Utakai Hajime is an Imperial New Year’s poetry reading that has a history of over 750 years. The Emperor visits and poetries from the same topic is read. The theme for 2018 was “Go (Word).” Suzuki wrote about how Japanese words sometime get misunderstood by the kids raised in the US, and was chosen as one of the top 10 poems out of over 20 thousand poems. Suzuki is active as an essayist and holds poetry gatherings, too. At the dinner, she talked about the Utakai Hajime and how she met the Emperor to the community representatives and her friends, as well as the members from her poetry gathering.

Onizuka Space Science Day

Saturday, March 10th was the Onizuka Space Science Day at the El Camino College in Torrance. As always, kids enthusiastic about space gathered to the event. This event is annually held by Honda. It is to honor the achievement of astronaut, Ellison Onizuka who died from the accident of the spaceship Challenger 32 years ago. NASA astronaut, Shane Kimbrough attended this year as the keynote speaker. Kimbrough stayed in space through the mission held by the ISS from 2016 to 2017 for 189 days. He spoke about his interesting experience in space and taught how to make a sandwich in space. Afterwards, the kids asked their questions to Kimbrough at the Q&A session. At the experience room after the lecture, the kids worked on what interests them and learned science while having fun.

Love to Nippon

A memorial gathering, Love to Nippon was held on Sunday, March 11th at Downtown’s LAPD for the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. Love to Nippon is a restoration project started by Masako Unoura when she experienced the great earthquake in Japan, and is the 7th year. At the event, the Tohoku region prefectures promoted their places; Japanese American organizations shared information and disaster kits; and, Wadaiko and shodo performance were held. The memorial service was done by the LA Buddhist Association and the Little Tokyo Japanese American Religion Association, and attendees all prayed for the victims. LAFD Chief Deputy, David Richardson stated “Our team headed to the scene 7 years ago when the earthquake struck. All I can say from the trainings is that, we shall continue to better ourselves and keep supporting the local community.” President, Douglas Erber of the Japan America Society of SoCal and Chief Consul of Consulate General of Japan in LA, Hiroki Matsuo stated their greetings; and the Union
Church of LA and Friends sung 2 numbers for the reconstruction of the Great Eastern Earthquake.

Pechanga Resort and Casino Grand opening

The construction for Temecula’s Pechanga Resort and Casino finished. March 8th was the Asian media press day, introducing the new facilities. Pechanga Resort and Casino is the largest casino in the state of California located on the Indian reservation. It is owned and ran by the Luiseño Indians. The construction started on 2015 with a fee of $3 hundred million. A hotel tower having 568 rooms, 17 therapy rooms with a 2 story spa and 4.5 acres of pool area were newly added. At the ceremony, President, Edith Atwood of Pechanga Development Corporation greeted; this is for hoping economic development of the Pechanga band. He stated that Pechanga has a positive effect on the local infrastructure for the tribe and local community. Pechanga Resort and Casino also provides services and events targeting Asian customers; and a new logo for the Asian community using the legendary animal that brings happiness, Pi Xiu was also announced.

OCJAA 2018 Officers Installation and Community Service Awards Banquet

Sunday, February 25th was the 2018 Officers Installation and Community Service Awards Banquet for the Orange County Japanese American Association at the Anaheim Hotel. OCJAA is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986 and contributes to the community through cultural, educational and welfare services. The new members of the office were introduced first at the event. Kimiko Fujita, who is the president for 6 years in a row commented “We are now here because of all the supports. So we hope to receive your continuous support.” Followed by the greetings of each Japanese American organization representatives. And then the award ceremony was held. First, letter of appreciation were handed to the president of the Shodo Dokokai, Masahiro Takahashi and the Keiro for providing nursing and welfare service to the elders. The award for distinguished services went to Yukinori Yoshimura for organizing iPad seminars, and Hondaya Inc. managing Japanese restaurants in LA and OC. 151 people attended which were mainly members. Keynote speech by former deputy general manager, Terry Hara as well as demonstrations of Japanese ikebana were held.

Japanese Food Festival

The Japanese Food Festival was held for 2 days from March 2nd to 3rd at Downtown LA. This is an annual event held by the Japanese Food Culture Association to spread Japanese food culture in the US, and many Japanese food fans attended yet again this year. Varieties of food products and sake were served by well-known Japanese food distributors Popular 64 companies and organizations participated serving karaage, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, ramen and other casual foods. Other than tastings for the public and promoting, workshops and seminars were held for the industry individuals. Gigantic tuna filleting show was held at the stage and made mega rolls. Local specialties had the spotlight this year. Tokushima, Toyohashi and Hamamatsu’s local specialty were introduced with travel agencies also promoting their travel plans. More than 3,500 people attended the 2 days.

The Reception Party of JBA’s 57th Anniversary

February 20th was the reception party celebrating JBA’s 57th anniversary at the official residence of the Consul General of Japan in LA. SoCal has the most Japanese businesses coming into the US and JBA is an economic organization supporting them since 1960. 500 companies join the organization and JBA is active in improving the business environment of Japanese companies, as well as contributing to the local community. 150 people including members, local community personnels and government agency epresentatives attended and socialized. General Manager of LA Economic and Workforce Development Department GM of LA Economic and Workforce Development Department, Jan Perry stated “Japanese businesses are a must have for the LA county and the State of California.” President, World Trade Center of Los Angeles President of the World Trade Center of LA, Stephen Cheung commented “The amount of the employment proves how much the Japanese businesses and the local community are involved to one another.” JBA was involved in solving the harbor strike that happened in the 1960s, along with the friction between the Japanese companies and the local businesses. In the 70s where the economy shifted to floating exchange rate system, they worked on fixing the tax system and improving the business environment. They have also contributed to local communities through donations and volunteering.

Pep Rally for Academy Award Nominees

A pep rally was held for the Japanese and Japanese Americans who were nominated for the Academy Awards on Monday, February 26th at the official residence of the Consul General. For the 90th Academy Awards 3 Japanese and Japanese Americans were nominated. They are: Kazuhiro Tsuji for Makeup and hairstyling; Kaoru Kuwahata for the Animated Short; and Ramsey Ann Naito for the Animated Feature. “Negative Space” nominated for the Animated Short is a stop motion film depicting the bond between father and son, where the father teaches his son how to pack a suitcase. Kaoru Kuwahata, who directed the film with her husband stated “I am honored to be one of the few women nominees.” “The Boss Baby” is an animated feature, where the main character is a baby executive who has the brain of an adult. Producer, Ramsey Ann Naito commented “I hope the audience can feel the message of sympathy and acceptance through the movie, which are two important factors for us.” Tsuji did the special effects makeup on Gary Oldman, transforming him into Winston Churchill for the “Darkest Hour”. He stated “I am happy that I got nominated with Gary Oldman for this film.” This is his 3rd nomination. The Academy Awards starts on 5pm tonight.

Japanese Prefectural Association of Southern California’s 2018 New Officers Installation & Friendship Luncheon

February 11th was Japanese Prefectural Association of Southern California’s 2018 New Officers Installation & Friendship Luncheon at Montebello’s Quiet Cannon. Nanka Kenjinkai Kyogikai is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1964 and has 39 different prefectural association joining, where individuals from the same prefectures gather. They all support one another and do various activities like: funding scholarships, supporting the devastated areas and strengthening the ties between the U.S. and Japan. 150 individuals representing each Kenjinkais and Japanese American organizations attended the event. First, the chairman was introduced. Followed by introducing each kenjinkai as they spoke proud of their own prefectures. Afterwards, the new members of the board were introduced and the inauguration ceremony was held under the supervision of a lawyer. Yoshinori Akutagawa will be taking place of Kazuhiko Nishimoto and is the new chairman. Akutagawa has been active as the chairman of the Hiroshima Kenjinkai and the member of the Nanka Kenjinkai Kyogikai. At his speech, he stated “I hope we can all discuss the aging issue of our members and how our associations are lacking in presence.”Also, former chairman, Nishimoto was awarded a certificate for contributing to the
Kenjinkai Kyogikai.

Doshisha Alumni Association U.S. West’s New Year’s celebration and general meeting

Doshisha Alumni Association U.S. West’s New Year’s celebration and general meeting was held at the restaurant in Downtown on February 17th. Doshisha Alumni Association is founded by the graduates of the university and its associated schools and members with a teaching background. 150 members reside in the U.S. West. At the general meeting, the new chairman was decided and Mitsuko Gordon was chosen. At the speech, she stated “I hope we can strengthen the Doshisha bond that expands not only in SoCal but throughout the U.S.”Chancellor, Eiji Hatta of the Doshisha was invited from Japan as a guest and held a lecture. Chancellor Hatta graduated Doshisha University in 1971. He taught economics and was the president of the university in the past. In 2017, he took the positions of both the chancellor and the Chairperson Board of Trustees of the Doshisha. Meals and networking happened after the lecture. Chancellor Hatta visited each table and socialized with about 60 members.

Toyota Motor North America new headquarters

It has been about 6 months since Toyota Motor North America opened its new headquarters in Texas. Toyota announced its “One Toyota” project in 2014 where they create a unified operation in North America, by bringing together its quality engineering, sales, marketing, financial services and corporate functions in one location. Since the plan of building their new HQ in Plano, TX, the group companies in NY, KY and the manufacturing company in Torrance, CA moved to the new Texas HQ. Plano is located north from Dallas and many business have their HQ since Plano is known for having great schools and peaceful neighborhoods. Many Asians like Chinese residents are fairly popular as well. Many Japanese supermarkets and restaurants are opening their Texas location too. Toyota’s new HQ is located 20 miles from the DFW Airport. 4100 staff currently work at the company and 2000 moved from Torrance, CA.

The musical “Allegiance”

February 4th was SoCal Gardeners Federation’s New Years gathering and inauguration ceremony. 16 unions join the nonprofit SoCal Gardeners Federation, and members help each other as well as doing public service. This year’s board members were announced before the 125 members, and 7 members took oath including the new chairman, Hisamori Iwashita. Iwashita has been the president of SoCal Kagoshima Kenjinkai and Japanese Prefectural Association of SoCal in the past and stated “Although I still have a lot to learn, I will do my best for this union’s future.” 2 people were chosen for the achievement award this year. Seiichi Fujitani from the bay area ran 2 terms in 2016 and 17 as the chairman and has worked hard for the union. Former Bay area member, Makoto Shirasawa taught vegetable seminars to the public for 7 years and worked for the community. The Gardeners Federation was found in 1955 and had about 6,000 members postwar at its golden days, but now decreased to 670 members.

2018 JCCSC Inauguration

The 2018 member inauguration of Japanese Chamber of Commerce of SoCal took place at the Almansor court on January 28th. JCC of SoCal is a nonprofit organization with 170 members supporting businesses networking with one another and is active in strengthening ties between US/Japan as well as public service. The members of the office took oath as members and related 223 individuals attended the ceremony. Running his 2nd term, President Jeff Yamazaki stated “We hope to achieve more members by holding networking events every month. And hopefully that leads to living up the community.” After each representatives of the Japanese organization gave their greetings, the achievement award ceremony happened. The Southern California Shigin Federation that received the organization award was found on 1990, and now expands to 6 different styles spreading the Japanese Shigin culture in the US. The spirit award went to 2 people. Miyoko Nishimoto has been volunteering since the 1980s at the OC district and many of the major Japanese American organizations. Helen Ota started her volunteer work from 1989 at the Nisei Week, and has been active with the community through entertainment.

This year’s board members were announced before the 125 members, and 7 members took oath including the new chairman, Hisamori Iwashita. Iwashita has been the president of SoCal Kagoshima Kenjinkai and Japanese Prefectural Association of SoCal in the past and stated “Although I still have a lot to learn, I will do my best for this union’s future.” 2 people were chosen for the achievement award this year. Seiichi Fujitani from the bay area ran 2 terms in 2016 and 17 as the chairman and has worked hard for the union. Former Bay area member, Makoto Shirasawa taught vegetable seminars to the public for 7 years and worked for the community. The Gardeners Federation was found in 1955 and had about 6,000 members postwar at its golden days, but now decreased to 670 members.

CES 2018

World’s largest electronics and technologies expo, CES was held for 4 days from January 8th. It was as if Google’s tremendous booth was representing this year’s theme of “Artificial Intelligence AI”. Many products that have this technologies and robots gathered the spotlight. Car manufacturers have been essential to this expo for the last couple of years, and they have also announced cars with AIs built in. Toyota announced its new concept car, “e-Palette” foreseeing the future of ride-sharing and carpooling; as well as 2 concept cars using their “Concept-i” technology where the AI scans the driver’s emotions and supports them. This is the Japan Tech Pavilion, where 12 companies gathered and participated at CES under “The major company supporting the startup companies.” Unique products with interesting takes and technologies were introduced. More than 3,900 companies from all over the world participated in this year’s CES, and the expo gave an glimpse of how our lives are going to be in the future.

NAMM 2018

This is the world’s largest music related expo, NAMM Show. It was held from January 25th to 28th at the Anaheim Convention Center. Like the CES, NAMM Show targets global companies, and about 2,000 companies participated with more than 700 brands introducing their newest model. Attendees gathered information while they actually touched the instruments and listened to the live performances. Like last year, Shizuoka, Japan’s Hamamatsu City participated, promoting their city as “The city of instruments.” Hamamatsu has many HQ like YAMAHA, Roland, Kawai and other major musical instrument manufacturers. Many mid to small business are also working at the city, making industry related products. 7 local companies participated this year and introduced products utilizing their technologies and craftsmanship. Best known Japanese guitar maker, ESP introduced their custom made electric guitar. Takamine, specializing in acoustic guitars and acoustic-electric guitars introduced their newest model as well. 115,000 people attended the 4 days, which is more than the previous year.

ANREALAGE “A LIGHT UN LIGHT”

The gallery inside Hollywood’s Japan House opened, and the exhibit of the Japanese fashion brand, ANREALAGE had begun. Japan House is a project started by the Japanese Foreign Ministry. It is a facility that spreads Japanese cultures and technologies to the world and has 3 locations throughout the globe. The gallery held its soft opening as the grand opening of the facility is this summer, and a preview was held on January 18th to the related individuals before the public. ANREALAGE is a fashion brand found by designer, Kunihiko Morinaga and it is known for its creative concept. This exhibition is entitled “A LIGHT UN LIGHT”. Under the theme of light, clothings utilizing the latest technology were lined up. There were clothes that changes its patterns under light and clothes that patterns only appear under light. This event is free of charge. It is held until March 21st at the gallery inside Japan House on the 2nd floor of Hollywood & Highland.

JBA New Year Reception

The New Year celebration was held for the JBA at Torrance on Wednesday, January 17th. JBA is a nonprofit organization where about 500 Japanese companies are a part of and is active on spreading common knowledge between the businesses, as well as contributing to the local communities. The Orange County Friendship Choir opened up the party. At the ceremony, Consul General, Akira Chiba stated “SoCal has the highest number of Japanese companies investing in doing business overseas above all countries. That is truly impressive.” JBA Chairman, Hitoshi Ishikawa stated “We are even more proud of this organization as we found out that over 6,000 people were involved with the events that JBA held.” About 500 attended this celebration. They all socialized and exchanged business cards with one another, eating the osechi meals and sushi that were served. Lastly, the annual raffle was held. Prizes were provided by various companies and the grand prize was a round trip plane ticket from Delta Airlines.

Asian American Expo

The Asian American Expo was held on January 13th and 14th at Pomona. This is an annual event that takes place every New Year for the Asian
community and this year marks the 37th time. It originally started celebrating the Chinese New Year for the local communities, and it expanded throughout the year. The event has now grown into a huge one, where Asian countries all over the world participate and overa 100 thousands attend. More than 1000 companies domestically and globally participated, exhibiting various goods from: food, cosmetics, electronics to anime.
From Japan, companies like: Kikkoman, Calpico, Toyota participated and introduced their newest products. Having many Asian customers including Japanese, Pechanga Resort & Casino announced their February raffle celebrating the Chinese New Year; as well as promoting their new facility that will be finished by early March, an investment of $285 million for the company. Food stands from all over the world were served outside the venue; and performances like the lion dance, martial arts and fashion show entertained the attendees on stage.

Coming of Age Ceremony

The Coming of Age Ceremony happened on Sunday, January 14th at Torrance. This event is held by the Japanese Culture and Traditions Assoc./ L.A.
Nadeshiko Organization, and people who are in their 20s or are becoming 20 years old within the year participated. In Japan, 20 years old is the coming of age and the entire country celebrates in the month of January. Here in LA, NPO organization, Nadeshiko Organization started the coming of age ceremony 5 years ago to spread the Japanese kimono culture. 24 men and women participated this year. Men wore haori and hakama, as women gorgeously dressed in furisode kimonos. At the ceremony, each participants stated their goals in front of their family and guests. And Consul General, Chiba congratulated them. Japanese taiko, traditional dances and calligraphy performances were done to celebrate the coming of age. The ceremony ended by guests congratulating each and every one of the participants.

Kotohajime

The annual Kotohajime, starting of the New Year happened on Sunday, January 7th at Little Tokyo’s Aratani Theater. This event annually takes place in JACCC and it is the 35th year. This year’s theme was “Hatsuzora First Sky.” Artists and talents from LA all did their best performances. Performing the Majikina Okinawan dance. Kyokkaku Kawamoto performed the biwa music. And the LA Buddhist Association performed their service. Lastly was the LA Archery Club’s rite of purification, where the stage director, Hirokazu Kosaka performed the “First Bow” and it lit the finale by hitting the target. The Shikishi Exhibition also opened at the first floor of JANM inside the Doiaki Gallery. This year is the 20th year for this exhibition, where participants and Admission is free. It is held until February 4th.

Conferment Ceremony

The award ceremony for Kitty Sankey receiving her Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays happened last November 29th at the official residence of the Consul General. Each autumn and spring, the Japanese government announces and awards individual for their achievements toward the country of Japan or society. Sankey is a 3rd generation Japanese American born in Tokyo. While she was a teacher in the LA Unified School District, she has participated actively in the Japanese American community to better the status of Japanese American. Postwar, as a chairman of the JACL LA division, she fought for Japanese American human rights in the US. 2016 , she was chosen as the first female chairman at JCCSC, and was involved in the Japanese Women’s Society of SoCal. 50 people including family members and friends attended the ceremony. Sankey stated “I am proud of myself being able to become the bridge between Japanese and Japanese Americans, based on the knowledge my parents and ancestors passed onto me. Thank you.” In the LA jurisdiction, Thelma Press was also awarded for her active
involvement with the sister city.

New Year Celebration in Little Tokyo

A New Year’s event happened at Little Tokyo on January 1st. Held by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of SoCal, this event marks its 20th year. It has become an annual event for the New Year in the Japanese American community. First, greetings were done by the representatives, along with the sake barrel breaking, Kagamiwari. Next, Taiko drumming and a Shishimai dragon dance happened. The Nisei Queen and her court tossed mochis and liven up the New Year. Mochi pounding, mini shrines wishing for a good year, as well as food stands lined up with: yakisoba, takoyaki and okonomiyaki at the Onizuka Street. The area was filled with cheerful faces. A game section was made at Frances Hashimoto Plaza. Kids enjoyed playing kendama, spinning tops and origami sumo wrestling. This event started to revitalize Little Tokyo, and pass down the traditional Japanese culture to younger generations. But now, it is an annual event for the New Years in LA. A Shusho-e New Years service was held at the Koyasan Buddhist Temple. W orshippers drew their omikuji luck of the year and received charms. This day was a great weather, and 15,000 people spent a cheerful New Years Day.

Rose Parade

The annual Rose Parade happened on January 1st at Pasadena. This event celebrating the New Years in America, is the 129th time this year. Crowds gathered at Colorado Boulevard; floats covered with colorful roses, marching bands and the equestrians lit up the parade. “Making a Difference” was this year’s theme for the Rose Parade. The Honda float started off the parade as it sponsors the event. 34 meters long, 6 meters high. The float was named “Power of Dream Express” as colorful floats were decorated onto it. Representatives of organizations and associations supporting disabled children got on the floats. KTLA News Anchor, Frank Buckley’s oldest son, Ben participated representing the association for diabetes. 88 groups representing the city, business and community participated this year, and the New Year started marvelously.
