{"id":20370,"date":"2023-08-27T20:00:55","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T03:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jhollywoodnet.com\/?post_type=socaljapan&#038;p=20370"},"modified":"2023-08-26T16:17:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-26T23:17:20","slug":"2023-08-27","status":"publish","type":"socaljapan","link":"https:\/\/jhollywoodnet.com\/en\/socaljapan\/2023-08-27\/","title":{"rendered":"August 27th 2023 O.A."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p><\/p>\n<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"> August 27th 2023 O.A.<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VYyPi_AmyRE\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Nisei Week 2023<\/h2>\n<p>The 81st Nisei Week Japanese Festival happened at Little Tokyo from August 12th.<\/p>\n<p>Nisei Week Festival is a festival that spreads the history, culture, and tradition of the Japanese and Japanese American community to the US.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, August 12th was the Coronation Ball at the Aratani Theatre for the Nisei Queen contest, one of Nisei Week\u2019s marquee events.<\/p>\n<p>7 candidates were chosen by Japanese American organizations located throughout LA.<br \/>\nFor 3 months, they practiced manners, dance and speech to become the next Nisei Queen.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Emiko Kubo was chosen as the first princess and Nancy Izumi Chin was chosen as Miss Tomodachi.<\/p>\n<p>The queen and court will act as ambassadors and participate in various events domestically and internationally. They will represent the LA Japanese American community for an entire year.<\/p>\n<p>The following Sunday August 13th was the Grand Parade.<\/p>\n<p>People from all over gathered to watch the highlight event of Nisei Week.<\/p>\n<p>The parade began with the veterans from WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War leading the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKyo no Kai\u201d choreographed the official Ondo.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Parade Marshal was former USC basketball player who is now a CrossFit Athlete, Jamie Hagiya.<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Marshal was former Executive Director of Little Tokyo Service Center and Community Leader, Bill Watanabe.<\/p>\n<p>Different floats and performances were done by the government officials, LA\u2019s sister city Nagoya prefecture, martial arts and sports, anime, dance, and Omikoshi.<br \/>\nPeople and organizations related to LA\u2019s Japanese American community and culture appeared and were introduced.<\/p>\n<p>The parade reached its climax as this year\u2019s Nisei Queen and court appeared.<\/p>\n<p>And the parade finished with LA Nebuta.<\/p>\n<p>The parade successfully ended with many cheers.<\/p>\n<p>The annual L.A. Tanabata Festival also happened alongside Nisei Week as well.<\/p>\n<p>This year marks the 15th time for the Tanabata Festival.<br \/>\nKazari decorations of Sendai Tanabata Festival were displayed at JANM and entertained people that visited the area.<\/p>\n<p>Kazari made by each kenjin kai and local community organizations were also displayed inside the facility.<\/p>\n<p>A workshop was also held on August 19th. Participants learned how to make their own kazari and hung their wishes onto small bamboos.<br \/>\nVisitors enjoyed Japanese customs that are done during the summer in LA.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the impact of the hurricane that hit LA., all various events scheduled for August 20th, including the street Ondo and the closing ceremony, have been canceled.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>SAKE ON THE ROCKS<\/h2>\n<p>Friday, July 28th was the \u201cSake on the Rock,\u201d a sake and food event held at Little Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>This was held by the nonprofit organization, Little Tokyo Service Center (LTSC) as their 15th annual fundraising event.<br \/>\nIt is the largest, most held Japanese sake and food event in SoCal.<\/p>\n<p>The raised funds will be used for LTSC\u2019s programs and initiatives that support senior members and low-income housing.<\/p>\n<p>About 50 different Japanese sake, shochu, and craft beers were served at this all-you-can-eat event.<br \/>\nFood booths offering snacks that go well with alcohol were also available.<\/p>\n<p>A shochu cocktail contest was also held and livened up the event.<br \/>\nAbout 1,000 people came to the event and participated in the fundraiser while having fun.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] August 27th 2023 O.A.
